Kansas City MO 2020 - present

Overview

Dead Peasant is a non-profit that publishes an anthology of literary and visual arts that celebrates all creatives. In 2020 during the Covid lockdown a few friends and I started Dead Peasant. We saw a need for a creative space that did not discriminate entry with paywalls or credentials. A platform to elevate anyone with a voice looking to get their work out there. To solve this problem, we made our own space in the form of this journal. Since our creation we have published four issues, hosted a few open mics, and even ran a creative writing workshop.

My Role

I have many roles in Dead Peasant, but primarily work as a graphic designer and editor. I also review submissions and assist in organizing events.

The Problem

The art scene in KC had taken a hit post Covid. There were fewer spaces for artists and writers to showcase their work and even less physical spaces for creative gatherings.

The Solution

Directly feeling the impact of this change, some friends and I took matters into our own hands. We started out collecting submissions for a jounral designed by us for our community. After the first successful Issue we realized we had solved the first problem and were ready to take it to the next level. While designing the second issue, we started hosting open mics for our literary friends. Following that we started hosting creative writing workshops that had an overwhelmingly positive reception.

Our primary product: The Journal

Each issue features a unique theme that framed the journals aesthetic and submissions.

  1. Self titled, named after a corporate life insurance policy.

  2. Dog Vision, A collection of black, white, and greyscale work.

  3. DON’T LOOK, Striking and stunning works.

  4. Electric Scabs, All about the coming wave of artificial intelligence and its effect of the arts.
